    Free Infragravity Waves on the Inner Shelf: Observations and Parameterizations at Two Southern California Beaches

    • Infragravity (IG) waves on the inner shelf (10–15 m depth) in San Diego, USA are often dominated by refractively trapped free waves.
    • Free IG energies are parameterized as a function of local sea-swell conditions and tide level.
    • Numerically modeled wave runup is only weakly influenced by the shoreward propagating IG waves observed at the offshore boundary.

    UAV-video based estimates of nearshore bathymetry

    • Wave crests can be obtained from timestacks with the help of a U-Net neural network.
    • Surfzone bathymetry can be well estimated remotely with UAVs ( ~ 0.24m).
    • Crest-tracking surfzone and offshore cBathy estimates give nearshore bathymetries.

    Estimating runup with limited bathymetry

    • 24 composite bathymetries are evaluated with the SWASH 1D model.
    • Setup and infragravity swash are dependent on offshore bathymetry.
    • A frequency-weighted energy spectra parameterization of the 2% exceedance level of runup performs significantly better than a bulk parameterization.
    • Including both foreshore beach slope and surfzone slope improves the skill of runup parameterizations.
